It has just been reported that famous American music star Sean Diddy Combs bought a painting worth $21.1 million (N7.5 billion). The singer was recently revealed as the buyer of Chicago artist Kerry James Marshall’s Past Times artwork.
According to New York Times, Marshall’s painting was a thirteen-by-nine-foot canvas, which depicts a black family picnicking in a Chicago park. It was also reported that the artwork is the most expensive ever paid for painting bought by an African-American artist. Marshall’s gallerist, Jack Shainman, disclosed that the singer bought the artwork. He said: “I know that this work has found a home in a collection with purpose and an eye toward preserving the legacy that of Sean Combs and that means a lot.”
Shainman also added that the singer was introduced to the painter’s artwork by a friend and musical collaborator, Swizz Beatz. However, Marshall shared the picture of the artwork on Instagram with the caption: “Past Times. After completing the Garden Project series, Marshall painted Past Times, which moves into the shared public space of the city. High-rise towers appear in the distance but the focal point is an urban pastoral scene, filled with green grass and blue water. The African American figures all dressed in white are engaged in various forms of recreation. The painting depicts leisurely pastimes, but the title points to the past. In this respect, the perfect scene might suggest a history that hasn’t happened yet or desires come to life. The family in the foreground stares back at the viewer as if just interrupted. The songs on their radios suggest two divergent outlooks: a runaway imagination and a reality check got my money on my mind. All images and details: Kerry James Marshal Past Times, 1997. It could also be recalled that retired boxing champion Floyd Mayweather bought his daughter a diamond ring worth $5 million (N1.8 billion) as her 18th birthday gift. Too much money!
